Hazy & Hot

Published by under General Information

Fires around Westcliffe and Canon City have our skies hazy this morning.  And the weather word for the day is simply HOT.  No rain showers in sight. Temps. approaching records of 98 in Co.Sprgs. and 105 in Pueblo.  Makes us appreciate our 80’s and low 90’s here.

Huerfano Planning & Zoning

Published by under General Information

I spent all afternoon at the County P & Z Hearing.  Great turnout (over 250) and excellent speakers armed with facts and passion both.  A proposal was circulated asking for a brief moratorium on acceptance or for 7 conditions to be attached. And the public did indeed get to express their concerns. But P&Z ended up still sending on to Commissioners tomorrow with recommendation for approval, after adding only a few minor conditions that are probably not well defined nor enforceable.  Davis got some road and truck criteria defined and Lonnie Brown did get one good condition added on water sample testing and monitoring but otherwise no other major conditions were added except good faith efforts to work together and best efforts to comply, etc.

Huerfano Citizens To Speak Out

Published by under General Information

Tomorrow is a big day for Citizen Coalition to voice their dismay and displeasure regarding Shell application for an exploratory well just west of La Veta utilizing  “well fracking”  methods. The Huerfano County Commissioners and Manager seem to have disregarded public right and need for in depth hearings on another important valley matter.

The public outcry has been heard by concerned citizens and by Planning and Zoning who has requested the joint Hearing Tuesday, June 28, 1:30 pm at Huerfano County Community Center located at 928 Russell Av.  A grass roots group against unregulated fracking plans to meet at 1:00 prior to the hearing to discuss specific areas of  concern and possible ways to limit and mitigate damages in the future.  Our valley is too precious, too fragile and too important for us to ever simply turn a blind eye or deaf ear to what may be happening around us.  Let’s get the facts, weight the evidence and develope a plan of  good stewardship for our valley.

Raton Pass Closures

Published by under General Information

A recent wildfire near Raton, NM is causing intermitten closure and delays on I-25 over Raton Pass into Trinidad.  Traffic has been re-routed around that area. This may add several hours of drive time to our friends coming in from NM and TX.

Our La Veta Volunteer Fire Dept. has been out confirming physical addresses and access in case of an emergency. Neighbor Mike Christian dropped in on our place last week.  We appreciate their work and are so glad to have them.

Shell Oil buys water

Published by under General Information

Shell Oil has made an agreement with City of Walsenburg to purchase water for its upcoming natural gas well drilling activity. Shell has leased mineral rights west of La Veta and intends to drill an exploratory well up to 10,000 feet deep in search of natural gas. Petroglyph Drilling recently announced plans to shut down their more shallow depth methane gas drilling operations entirely.  Shell will be using typical fracturing fluids in their process. Fracking has recently given rise to public health and safety concerns in many areas with potential contamination of water supply being a huge worry of all.  Shell suggested that we could learn more about their current Wyoming fracking at  No doubt we all have a lot of concern and a lot more that we want to learn.
