New Trustee Appointment

Published by under General Information

Considerable discussion and opinions surround the upcoming Board  appointment of the remaining La Veta Trustee spot created by vacancy.  As of now, the Board is comprised of 3 pre-existing  Board  members and 3 newly elected  members.  This new appointment is a critical issue.

Several letters to Editor this week endorsed appointing former Trustee Tracy Webb due to her highest vote runner-up position in recent election.  And she would be a capable experienced choice.  But would the town citizens prefer the highest new vote getter, among a  new runoff election of those remaining contender candidates?  That result might be different.  Then there also remains the question of who best represents the Board change that the voters seemed to have favored and endorsed.

The past 4 similar vacancies have previously been filled after reviewing the submitted Letters of Interest from all prospective applicants.  A Town Workshop has been scheduled for this Monday, Apr.19, 6:00 PM to discuss the procedure to be used this time.  The Board evidently has 60 days (rather than 30)  in which to make a majority vote decision or this could go to a special town election.

Spanish Peaks Scout Camp

Published by under General Information

Had a fun discussion with Larry Jarrett the other day regarding the Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch located on Bear Creek Road at the foothills of the East Spanish Peak. They are getting geared up for their summer scout season beginning on June 6th and running through July 18th.  If I was 40 years younger, I’d apply for one of the several positions at the camp and enjoy a summer in the great outdoors. But instead, we will enjoy a dinner around the campfire sometime during their season.

Scenic Railroad

Published by under General Information

The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad opens for the season Memorial Day weekend and runs through October 17th.  They have altered a daily route from La Veta now called The Fort Garland Limited which will run on weekends and for the train’s 31 concert dates – leaving from La Veta at 10 a.m.  This will be a fun way to visit Ft. Garland’s antique shops and the Fort Garland Museum.  The train will continue to keep the existing route that departs Alamosa every day in the summer and early fall.  The concerts up at Fir are just “good ole western fun” so be sure to check out their website for details on dates, times, concerts and departures – – It’s stacking up to be a fun-filled summer in The Cuchara Valley.

No Golf Dates Yet

Published by under General Information

One of our associates ran into Dr Briggs here over the weekend.  Briggs was asked about a possible announcement of a Grandote Golf Course 2010 Opening Date.  But unfortunately, no committment as of yet.  He seems to be waiting for that last vacancy spot to be filled on the Town of La Veta  Trustees.

The Town Board has 30 days in which to approve (by majority vote) the filling of that Trustee vacancy.  (hummm)  Lacking an affirmative majority vote, it would fall back to a public special election.

Great Weather

Published by under General Information

It was a  beautiful weekend here in the Cuchara Valley with temps in the 60’s.  Snow quickly melting and mud even drying out.    Great weather for house-hunting too.  We went to Steve and Pam’s going away party Friday evening and told stories, sang and visited with everyone.  A great time.  They will sure be missed.  Saturday nite looked like a near sell-out for the Willson and McKee show.

Next weekend is Open Mic on Friday and a special weekend production (Fri-Sat-Sun) at the Performing Arts Center.  Death by Dessert promises to be a delightful hors d’oeuvores mystery.  They say the food will be to die for.  Tickets are at the door, at True Value and at Charlies.  Come on over to see us.

Back to Everyday Life

Published by under General Information

The excitement and talk of the elections is winding down a little and we are getting back to the daily events in the Cuchara Valley.  Winds have been winding down too and a great weekend looks to be in store for us.  Green grass soon?  Yes, and probably another surprise snow or two sometime in the future also.

Our congratulations to Bob Baker (La Veta True Value) on his election as President of the La Veta Cuchara Chamber of Commerce.  More on his committees and economic development plans later.

Remember the Steve Perkins Farewell Party Friday from 5 to 8 pm at the Parkside in La Veta.  And a great Willson and McKee concert on Saturday evening at 7:30 in the Performing Arts/Theater building on Francisco.

First Town Meeting

Published by under General Information

The passing of the gavel for La Veta Town Board was held tonight.  A nice crowd of 50 or 60 well wishers attended to express their thanks and appreciation to Former Mayor Mickey Schmidt and to welcome and support new Mayor Don Keairns and Trustees Klinke, Irwin and Davis.  After brief items of Old Business, Schmidt gave the oath of office to the newly elected officials and recessed the meeting, after which it was called back to Order by Mayor Keairns.  Keairns echoed thanks to outgoing Mayor Schmidt, Trustees Webb and Yarbrough and officially welcomed the new Board.

Klinke was elected Mayor pro-tem, but appointments to Town Magistrate Judge and other official positions were postponed until next meeting. Keairns election as Mayor has created a Trustee vacancy which was discussed. The filling of that vacancy was also tabled pending a workshop discussion in approx. 2 weeks.

Thank you one and all for your views and comments concerning our local La Veta election.  Come visit, come work, come play and come stay.  La Veta is open for business with a good start to a new year full of excitement and optimism.

Don Keairns – La Veta Mayor

Published by under General Information

At 10:30 pm Tuesday evening, the election judges declared Don Keairns the new Mayor of La Veta.  Don ousted former Mayor Mickey Schmidt by a near landslide 230 votes to 145. This may be one of the largest margins of victory in recent memory.  Don and wife Mitzi are owners of the well known Charlies Market in La Veta.  He has been serving as Trustee on Town Board and ran for Mayor on a platform that included strong economic development and business changes.

Newly elected  Trustee Larry Klinke received 175 votes, the highest  number of votes by far, among the Trustee candidates. Larry and Deb own the Olive Tree B&B here. Larry will be joined on the Town Board by other winners Laurie Irwin and incumbent Dale Davis.   Klinke’s high popularity vote count would suggest his consideration for Board elected Mayor Pro-tem at Wednesday night’s organizational meeting.

Congratulations to the new Mayor and Trustees.  La Veta’s future looks promising and bright under the new Board  structure.

We also extend our thanks to Mayor Schmidt and Trustees Tracy Webb and Jesse Yarbrough for their dedication and service to our town these past few years.
