Calving Starts
Another 6 inches of new fresh snow today. But this new baby says what the heck is going on. We are beginning to see more new calves every day now.

Wow, another 5 inches of new snow last night and more predicted on Sunday. And over the weekend, don’t forget to join us Saturday evening for dinner at Franciscos (La Veta Inn). Tom Munch and David Enke will be playing. It should be delightful. And by popular demand, the Inn is now Open 4pm-9pm serving dinner Tuesdays thru Saturday. Yippee and Hooray!

The Colorado Dept. of Wildlife (DOW) has produced a great new video. Elk Camp Colorado is a nice wildlife show whether or not you are a hunter. La Veta and Cuchara may not be known for the biggest and best elk herds in the state, but our hunting prospects are always good. See the video at http://wildlife.state.co.us:80/NewsMedia/Videos/

We had nice snows throughout the Cuchara Valley this past weekend. And we were needing that moisture. More scattered flurries predicted for Thursday and again Sunday. The West Peak and Sangres are looking beautifully white again.

My previous blog did cover the basic action of the Town Board this week. But there is also more to the story. And the Huerfano Journal gets a few comments of Board Trustees. Reasons or Excuses? Story will not be cyber available on-line until next week when the Journal uploads it.
Meanwhile, Trustee Dale Davis gets his nomination petition signatures today. Mack McAnally and Roger Brunelli were seen working the street corners as well.

Prospective candidates for the upcoming La Veta election were able to pick up their nominating petitions yesterday. Downtown streets have been busy with candidates beginning to obtain the necessary voter signatures required to allow them on the election ballot. The deadline for turning in the signatures is March 5. Election is April 6. Candidates already seen around town included Don Lowell, Larry Klinke and Kelly Popejoy. More rumored names later.

Town action (or lack thereof ) was at last night’s semi-monthly Board Meeting. Mr. Harrison was again on the Agenda, to request the Town’s response to his Grandote proposal of two weeks ago. I was not able to attend, but am told that the Board went into a 90 minute private Executive Session to discuss the decision. Then subsequently came out and announced that State Annexation Laws required declining the proposed Offer. Upon motion duly seconded, that declination motion Passed. No alternatives nor counters were put forth by further motion. I will update, edit or correct this as more information becomes available.

It has been cold and clear these past few days. And I have been down with a bad cold for nearly a week now. So, a slow week for news. Winter photo is on my new homepage at www.lavetarealty.com

Sunday brought us a nice snow all day. About 6 inches in La Veta, 12 or more in Cuchara and nearly 20 inches up at Mountain Resort. And still snowing. Driving into work this morning I enjoyed all the fresh snow signs. Critter tracks everywhere. Deer tracks, fox and probably a rabbit and skunk or two. No bear tracks seen since he came out and saw his shadow last week. Six more weeks of winter.

The first Open Mic of 2010 was held at the Parkside in La Veta last weekend. We enoyed an early dinner at La Veta Inn’s Franciscos before the show and reserved for their Valentine’s Dinner this next Saturday night. Nextdoor at Open Mic, An estimated 75 people enjoyed the local music of Brent and Babs, the Savages and the Enkes. My what diverse talent we have here. We are already looking forward to the next session.
