Wahatoya Elk
Boy did I get a treat this evening. After brief snow flurries, Liz took the dogs for a short walk while I finished up the dinner dishes. She came back calling me to “come see the elk herd”. There must have been nearly 200 head. And was it ever beautiful.
We live on 70 acres in the Wahatoya Valley just south of La Veta. We often see elk in the valley at our neighbor’s Big Wall Ranch, just across the road from our place. But it is usually only a small bunch. Tonight, we saw the entire West Peak Wahatoya Herd. They will soon be heading on up to the high country. We will see small groups on occasion all summer, but we may not get to see the entire big herd again until fall.
