Lee Merkel of the Colorado Dept. of Local Affairs visited with Town Board Monday regarding services offered by DOLA.  Those include Town governing,  budgeting, grants, workshops and planning.  Regional Planner Bill Grey spoke of the need for a current Community Plan and the role of a town planning commision in land use planning.  As Bill and Lee stated, La Veta has the same issues and conflicts that most all other small towns have.  How we handle them is the key.  And issues of economic development, zoning, energy impact and annexation, are all handled much more easily under a Community Master Plan rather than in the face of  politically charged specific issue proposals.

The Town Board scheduled an annexation workshop to be held June 7 and a Planning 101 workshop to be June 28.

Thanks for the update Jerry. Glad to hear they are at least moving in a positive planning direction. I’ve always said, if you don’t have a vision for the community and a plan for realizing that vision, you are not a leader and not upholding your full obligations to the community you serve. It’s easy to be a bureaucrat, but only a few can be true leaders.

Thank Heavens! Grats to whomever got this meeting! Now to see how the leaders listened to the technicals and see what they do/CAN do. In other places, there were plenty of public forums for input…once they have a “vision/Plan” That is when the rubber will MEETS the road! Hope they have the chance to DO this while many are here this summer!!! Til then—-

I’ haven’t heard anyone mention this yet, so I will…..

I personally believe that policies and regulations need to be put on the actual Board members themselves…..whenever anyone of them votes for absurd rules and regulations to further their own personal agendas and vendettas, they should be asked to step down from the Board. Period.

It’s just was not right what happened with the Board raising annexation fees to $5,000 an acre. Policies and regulations need to be put in place to hold board members accountable and stop this before it happens again.

    Just my humble opinion…

I applaud the very forward thinking of our Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem for having DOLA get involved. La Veta has fallen years behind in state statutes and laws, and it is time to get it right. It is impossible to move forward unless we know where to begin, and as we saw in the DOLA meeting, we need to learn a lot of things! I was very excited to hear about their recommendations, and feel that our current Mayor and Pro Tem will continue to seek advice from those who are authorities in certain areas. Just a note, the workshop on June 7th, came out of the mediation with Grandote. This workshop is an invite from the Town to Grandote to start talking and moving forward. I for one am very excited, as it is time to move forward, and stop looking back. I also would love to have citizens be there for that workshop to begin understanding the full Grandote picture. Grandote will make a wonderful addition to the south end of town, and Grandote is VERY excited to continue to be a part of the community. I hope to see all of you at the Tournament for the Beautification Project. The support for it so far is AMAZING! I see a great pulling together of all entities to make this a success! Lets keep working together and make our forefathers proud of our progress!

Great comments. With some DOLA guidance on the process we can then develope a Town Plan and Vision Statement.
