Our eagles have landed

Published by under General Information

Every winter we get a pair of bald eagles here at the Town Lakes for just a week or two.  Welcome visitors, but they don’t stay long and are hard to get a good photo of.  This morning I caught one on the melting lake ice and this afternoon roosting in a far away tree.

I still love to watch the little newborns.  They are hitting the ground pretty early this year.

Cantrell Gives Resort Update

Published by under General Information

Last week Bruce Cantrell of Cuchara Mountain Resort provided a comprehensive update to La Veta and Cuchara area residents regarding the continuing work to revitalize the Resort.  The comments were provided at the Saturday community meeting and comprehensive planning discussion.  About 40 people attended.

Nordic skiing is now open to the public for cross-country and snow shoeing.  Trails have been groomed and access use is free.  Some of the older chairlifts have already been removed and others are being re-habilitated. Meetings with US Forest Service continue to look positive.  Some modest Grants have been received thus far.  The rate and success of the Resort Revitalization will begin to depend upon other upcoming grant applications, such as the March submission for $1.5 mill in matching grants from the US Economic Development Agency.  Other applications are being submitted to US Dept. of Agriculture, Gates Family Foundation and South Central Council of Governments.

Need a Paramedic?

Published by under General Information

untitled

La Veta and Cuchara are very fortunate to have a well trained staff of volunteer EMS personnel. I am very proud of  my sons, who are both paramedics in the fire, rescue and EMS field. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death, but one  in which quick intervention can oftentimes be successfull.  Your business, employer or golf course may even have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on site.  With proper training, these devices can truly become a “lifesaver”.  Check out the website and help google-juice their ranking, by clicking on www.emsaspects.com   My heartfelt thanks.

Quality Ranch Boom

Published by under General Information

Here is an article from Forbes about the recent sale of one of my favorite ranches.  Jeffrey and Nelson Lane family treated us to many a ride at the Bell Ranch over the years.  The article also comments on the possible exploding market in large western ranches. Seems the really smart and wealthy feel this is now a good place to put some of their liquid cash. http://blogs.forbes.com/monteburke/2010/08/18/americas-largest-private-land-sale-in-60-years/ So don’t overlook our own high-quality recreational ranches and working production ranches. Upper Echo, Bristlecone or Lower River Ranch may be just the ticket for you. Combine your investment strategy with a  lifestyle choice. http://www.lavetarealty.com/property_list.php?category=ranch

Cuchara Broomball

Published by under General Information

What do we do on a winter weekend in Cuchara.  Well broomball, of course.  Cal Sandbeck and a small handfull of Cuchara locals started this little tradition just a few years ago and it continues to grow.  This Saturday, 1:00 pm at the ski resort parking area accross from Resort Headquarters, about 50 folks will gather for a lively afternoon of broomball in the snow.  Come and join us.
