July 4 Parades

Published by under General Information

As many of you already know, the July 4 parades are a fun occasion here in the valley.  And the Cuchara parade is always right on July 4, but the La Veta parade is on the Saturday preceding July 4.  So seldom do both parades fall on the same day as they did last year.

La Veta parade on Saturday, July 3.   Cuchara on Sunday, July 4.  La Veta starts at 10:00 AM followed by Art in the Park, Rotary BBQ and Ranch Rodeo.  This year’s Cuchara 4th of July Parade starts at 1:00 PM as it is a Sunday.  Chapel services at 9:30 and 11:00.  Race at 8:30AM.  BBQ at Dog Bar starting at 11:00.  Thanks to Mary Strasser for this info.

Entertainment Dining

Published by under General Information

Classic Rock and Roll will vibrate the foundation of the Historic La Veta Inn on Saturday, July 3rd following the days parade festivities and the opening day of the annual Art In The Park celebration. This is truly one of the best days of the year to be in La Veta and gathering, dining, drinking and dancing within the confines of the iconic Inn will be the place to be saturday night.

Tom Munch will be playing his eclectic solo acoustic and vocal mix throughout the evenings of Friday, July 9th and Friday, July 30th. Tom always finds a way to make La Veta Inn evenings memorable. See you there for Dinner.

Concerts

Published by under General Information

The Old Blind Dogs concert last week was great.  A near sellout house to benefit our local Celtic Festival this fall.  The weekend also brought daily performances of Tom Paxton & The Berrymans up at Fir, via the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad excurtions.  And this Wednesday, June 30, will be the first La Veta Town Park Concert of the summer season.  The Rifters will be performing beginning at 6:30 pm.  Come join us for summer fun this season.

Medano Fire Report

Published by under General Information

The Medano Fire that started in Sand Dunes Nat’l. Park near Alamosa, has now spread to almost 5,000 acres and moved out of the Park boundaries and into the San Isabel Nat’l. Forest.  Not really visible from here in the Cuchara or La Veta area, but now creeping into NW portion of our own Huerfano County, the smoke is quite evident as seen from Gardner area.

Llano Estacado

The yucca plant is typically found east of here on the staked plains.  But this pretty field of blooms just south of La Veta reminds us that they are also located in the edge of the high mountain desert as well.

More Hot Times

Published by under General Information

Today’s forecast calls for up to 90 in La Veta, 80’s in Cuchara.  Then cooling down for the rest of the week with chance of a few showers.  The hot, dry weather has been fueling the Medano Fire north of Sand Dunes and a new fire in Parkdale Canyon near the Royal Gorge at Canon City.

A hot time at the Fox Theater this Thursday nite for a real cool event.  Scotland’s greatest folk band, The Old Blind Dogs, will be performing at 7:15 on June 24.  We plan to be there.

Medano Fire

Published by under General Information

Last week a small fire broke out on the north end of the Sand Dunes Nat’l. Park (located NE of Alamosa).  They elected to let it burn naturally, but that has now gotten out of hand.  Dry winds have whipped the fire up to now over 2,500 acres.  Smoke can be seen from Gardner to Pueblo.

This reminds us of the fire a few years ago that came toward Paradise Acres.  Scarry stuff.  Forecast calls for hot dry conditions next 7 days, but at least the winds are to mostly die down.  Cuchara Valley looks to be busy this weekend as most of the lodging in La Veta and Cuchara is already booked up.
