Town Lakes Fishing Club

Published by under Recreation

Opening Day for Fishing season is just around the corner and I got a great surprise today.  A call from the Fishing Club said that my name was drawn this year in the Fish Club Lottery.  The Town Lakes fishing privileges are leased to a local club.  Membership is limited to 100 people and there is a waiting list of several years to get in.  Some time ago I lobbied the Town and Club to allow an additional 10 applicants from the waiting list to be drawn from the hat for a one year membership.  And today was my lucky day.  If you are a resident living within La Veta RE2 school District, you need to get on the waiting list ASAP if you would like to become a member of the Fishing Club.

Grandote HOA Sues Town

Published by under Local News Affairs

As we predicted, the Grandote Peaks Homeowners have filed  suit to require Town of La Veta to maintain Grandote roads as part of the La Veta Street system.  This area of Grandote lies well within Town Limits but the Town has never acknowldege any obligation for street maintenance.  The homeowners apparently did not demand the Town reimburse them for prior years from the Highway User Tax funds collected by the Town.

Moratorium on Local Gas Exploration

Published by under General Information

Presco Energy has recently applied to Huerfano County for test gas drilling permits in Majors Ranch and other areas north and east of La Veta.  In a recent public hearing meeting, the County Planning Commission approved a recommendation to the County Commissioners, that would essentially place a moratorium on new permits until January 1, 2009.  This 9 months will provide the County an opportunity to speak with La Plata and other similar counties that have developed strict standards on new drilling permits.  We should all applaude the efforts of our County to protect property rights and public environmental concerns.  We are all “stewards” of the land and hold a responsibility for conservation and preservation, as well as honoring rights of mineral holders and owners.

In Colorado, mineral rights are different from surface rights and have in most cases been severed from the property.  Property owners are increasingly speaking up concerning their property rights and the inequity of benefits accrued from energy exploration.  Others have felt the damaging impact of exploration regarding our rural lifestyle and scenic setting.  Like Rifle and Durango, our neighbors right here in Weston and Aguilar have experienced the adverse changes brought about from recent methane gas production.

With the current high energy prices and squeezed revenues of State and County,  don’t think that oil & gas development will be phased out anytime soon.  Owners and Lessees of mineral rights have acquired those rights at some time in the past and now rightfully intend to recover their investment by extraction of those minerals.   But we must develop ways to regulate and manage the mineral resources without totally disregarding the rights of surface property owners as well as our lifestyles and landscapes.

Grandote Streets

Published by under Local News Affairs

Residents and Lot owners at Grandote Peaks golf resort have asked the Town of La Veta to provide the street maintenance for this town development.  The Town has likely collected Grandote street maintenance revenues from the State in the past, but denied the Grandote property owner’s request and disavowed the Town’s responsibility.  Look for more conflict to continue between the Parties.

Local Forum a Success

Published by under Local News Affairs

The La Veta Candidates Forum was held Monday evening before a crowd of over 60 people.  Candidates for positions of Town Trustees and Mayor, opened the meeting with their position statements and why they wanted the position.  Moderator Sam Law asked each a series of questions and then opened discussion for questions from the audience. There were some clear differences between Mayoral candidates postions but most concurred that fiscal responsibilty and water would  continue to be the major Town issues concerning growth.  Candidate Popejoy and several in the audience suggested a need for  more transparency, more citizen input and a more welcomed spirit of dialog and support for business.  Elections will be held April 1, with only the Mayoral position being challenged, by Sid Popejoy against the   incumbent Mayor Mickey Schmidt.
